On Tuesday, April 24th physicians from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Emergency Medicine and medical students facilitated a STEM workshop for students interested in health sciences such as Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, and Public Health to SciTech middle school students. The Student National Medical Association (SNMA)’s mission is to increase the number of underrepresented students in medicine. This was led by Casey Tompkins-Rhoades. She has worked through Pitt’s BSU chapter with SciTech students during her undergraduate degree and continues this partnership as she excels in her studies. Their agenda included 10 minute rotation stations in which students gained expertise in taking vital signs, creating tourniquets & splints as well as goal setting. Student participants received stethoscopes to share their new found knowledge with friends and family.
